Scott Ramon Seguro Mescudi, better known by his stage name Kid Cudi, is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, music producer, and actor. He was born on January 30, 1984 in Cleveland, Ohio. Mescudi grew up with a choir teacher mother and WWII veteran, house painter father. He got into a lot of trouble as a kid, he was even expelled from high school for threatening to punch the principal. He still managed to get into the University of Toledo as a film major but dropped out. Then, he tried to join the Navy but was rejected due to his juvenile record.
Cudi started rapping in his senior year of high school. At age 21, after dropping out of college, he moved in with his uncle in New York City who was a professional jazz musician. Cudi took the chance trying to make it in the music business himself, and had produced his first demo tape by the time he got to NYC.
In 2006, by blind chance, Cudi ran into Kanye West at Virgin Megastores. Cudi showed West some of his music, which West found impressive. In the meantime, one of Cudi’s early songs, “Day 'n' Nite”, became somewhat viral after he uploaded it to MySpace. As a result, West decided to sign him with his music label, GOOD Music. In 2008, Cudi was featured in XXL Magazine in their annual “Freshman Class” issue introducing up-and-coming rappers.
Kid Cudi’s debut album came out in September 2009, with the title “Man on the Moon: The End of Day”. It became a hit, peaking at the #4 spot on the famous Billboard 200 chart. Also in 2009, he went on his first nationwide Kid Cudi concert tour.
Since then, Cudi has released 6 more studio albums, thus he has 7 in total. The best selling among them has remained his debut album, which sold over 800,000 copies in the US alone. Meanwhile, the new Kid Cudi album was released in September 2022, with the title “Entergalactic”.
The biggest hits in the Kid Cudi setlist to date are “Day N’ Night” (2008), “Pursuit of Happiness” (2009) featuring MGMT, and “Erase Me” featuring his mentor Kanye West. He was also featured on the 2009 hit single by French DJ David Guetta“Memories”. And that is just his work as a solo artist. In 2010, he formed the alternative rock band “WZRD” with Dot da Genius. Their self-titled debut album in February 2012 debuted #1 on the Billboard chart. It contained such hits as “Brake” and “Teleport 2 Me, Jamie”.
