The Black Keys is an American rock duo. They were formed in 2001 in Akron, Ohio. The founding and only members to ever be part of the group are guitarist and vocalist Dan Auerbach (born in 1979 in Akron, Ohio), and drummer Patrick Carney (1980, Akron, Ohio).
Auerbach and Carney were childhood neighbors growing up in Akron. They both had musicians in their families. When they attended the same high school, the two started jamming together as well. After dropping out of college early on, Aurbach tried to make a living as a small-time singer-guitarist in bars. However, he had difficulty managing to do so, therefore he reached out for Carney for help. The two recorded a 6-track demo tape together. Thus, the rock duo "The Black Keys" was formed. The origin of their name is a sad one, as it comes from the incoherent utterances of a schizophrenic family friend - although, evidently, it also has a musical undertone, referring to the black keys on a piano. They sent out their demo tape to about a dozen labels, eventually signing with the small indie label Alive. In March 2002, the first ever The Black Keys concert show took place at the Beachland Ballroom and Tavern in Cleveland, Ohio.
Their debut album came out in May 2002, a blues rock record titled "The Big Come Up". Although it failed to become a commercial success, having not charted anywhere, the band continued to do live The Black Keys concert shows across small venues in the US. Their first album to get into the famous Billboard 200 chart was their third one, "Rubber Factory" from September 2004, which peaked at the #131 spot on the list. However, they hit mainstream success only with their 6th record, "Brothers", which came out in May 2010. With the standout tracks "Tighten Up" and "Howling for You", it ended up reaching the #3 position on Billboard 200.
Since then, the prolific Ohio rockers have released 5 more studio albums, thus they have 11 in total. The best selling one among them has remained "Brothers" from 2010, which sold 1.5 million copies in the US alone. Meanwhile, the latest new The Black Keys album came out in May 2022, with the title "Dropout Boogie". The biggest hits in The Black Keys setlist to date are the aforementioned "Tighten Up" (2010), "Gold on the Ceiling" (2011), and "Weight of Love" (2014).
