The Avett Brothers is an American folk rock band. They were formed in 2000 in Mount Pleasant, North Carolina. The founding members were two actual brothers, vocalist, guitarist, and percussionist Seth Avett (born in 1980 in Charlotte, North Carolina), and vocalist, banjo player, harmonica player, and percussionist Scott Avett (1976, Cheyenne, Wyoming).
Seth and Scott’s family had two professional musicians in it: their grandmother was a concert pianist and their father was a guitarist. Evidently, the two young boys got into music too, learnt multiple instruments, and often jammed with each other growing up. In the late 1990’s, Scott’s college band merged with Seth’s high school rock band. That new ensemble took on the name of Scott’s old band, “Nemo”. They put out 3 albums with the group. The Avett brothers also started experimenting with new music on their own, originally under the name “The Back Porch Project”. They released an EP in 2000 titled “Avett Bros”, and later adopted that name for their new band.
In 2002, they put out their debut album, “Country Was”. At that time, the band featured two other musicians on top of the Avett brothers, guitarist John Twomey and bassist Bob Crawford. They also went on a self-booked The Avett Brothers concert tour to promote the record. However, it failed to gain any significant commercial traction. The same year, they also released their first live album with the title “Live at the Double Door Inn”, a recording of a The Avett Brothers concert in Charlotte, North Carolina.
It took a long time for this folk rock band to hit mainstream success. It came at last in September 2009, with the release of their 6th studio album (but the first one backed by a major label, American Recordings). Their record “I and Love and You” peaked at the #16 spot on the famous Billboard 200 chart, while topping Billboard’s genre-specific Folk Albums chart. It ended up selling around 500,000 copies, making it the best selling one in the band’s discography. They put out a total of 10 studio albums over the years. The latest new The Avett Brothers album came out in October 2019, with the title “Closer Than Together”.
The biggest hits in The Avett Brothers setlist to date are “I and Love and You” (2009, same title as their album), “Morning Song” (2014), “No Hard Feelings” (2016), and “Ain’t No Man” (also 2016). After some changes, the band’s current line-up is made up of the two founding brothers, vocalist, guitarist, and percussionist Seth Avett and vocalist, banjo player, harmonica player, and percussionist Scott Avett; as well as bassist Bob Crawford, and cellist and pianist Joe Kwon.
