The Australian Pink Floyd Show, often simply called Australian Pink Floyd, is an Australian tribute band to the British rock band Pink Floyd. The tribute band was formed in 1988 in Adelaide, Australia. The founding members were guitarist Lee Smith, drummer Grant Ross, bassist Trevor Turton, vocalist and guitarist Steve Mac, and keyboardist Jason Sawford.
Smith placed an advert in a local newspaper in 1988, looking for a keyboardist and vocalist with “professional attitudes” for a band that only plays Pink Floyd cover songs. Mac and Sawford answered the ad, and they joined Smith, Ross, and Turton already on the roster. Originally going by the name “Think Floyd”, they started doing early The Australian Pink Floyd Show concert performances in small local venues.
The act kept getting more popular in Australia. On a personal trip to the UK, Mac met the publisher of the most popular amateur fan magazine dedicated to Pink Floyd. Through that connection, the band managed to land a The Australian Pink Floyd Show concert at the Wembley in London for the 1993Pink FloydFan Convention. The same year, they started using “The Australian Pink Floyd Show” name instead of Think Floyd.
In 1994, the actual Pink Floyd broke up, but that didn’t deter their Aussie fans. They kept doing live shows, even performing at former Pink Floyd guitarist and vocalist David Gilmour’s 50th birthday party in 1996. In 2004, they released their first live concert DVD of their show in Liverpool that year. Since then, new The Australian Pink Floyd Show albums of their live performances were also published: one in 2007, and one in 2016.
The Aussie cover band has remained a popular act worldwide since. They have performed The Australian Pink Floyd Show concert shows all around the world, from their homeland of Australia, to Europe, to North America. Their current line-up is made of 9 musicians, with Chris Barnes on the lead vocals.
