The Jonas Brothers is an American pop rock band. They were formed in 2005 in Wyckoff, New Jersey. The founding and only members to ever be part of the band are the three brothers, lead guitarist and backup vocalist Kevin Jonas (born in 1987 in Teaneck, New Jersey), lead vocalist, rhythm guitarist and keyboardist Nick Jonas (1992, Dallas, Texas), and vocalist, rhythm guitarist and percussionist Joe Jonas (1989, Casa Grande, Arizona).
The youngest of the three brothers, Nick, was the first to actively pursue a career in music. He tried to become a solo artist. However, in 2005, he decided to record a song with his brother Kevin called “Please Be Mine”. They sent it out to record labels, and got signed by the major industry player Columbia Records, along with the third brother Joe, as a group. Thus, Jonas Brothers was born.
Still in 2005, they went on a nationwide Jonas Brothers concert tour in the US. Their debut album came out in August 2006, with the title “It’s About Time”. It became a moderate hit, selling around 120,000 copies in the United States. The majority of the boyband’s fans has always been teenage or pre-teen girls. From their beginning, their music was featured on children’s shows, such as “Zoey 101” on Nickelodeon, or “American Dragon: Jake Long” on The Disney Channel. After the release of their debut album, they guest starred in an episode of “Hannah Montana”, a famous Disney Channel series starring Miley Cyrus.
Their second studio album, the self-titled “Jonas Brothers” from August 2007, performed a lot better than their first one. It peaked at the #5 spot in the famous Billboard 200 chart, while also reaching #9 on the OCC chart over in the United Kingdom. It still remains their best selling album to date, with 2.4 million copies sold in the US alone.
They released two more albums, one in 2008 and one in 2009, before they announced their break-up in October 2013. They cited the common reason for band dismantlements, “creative differences”, as well as “a deep rift within the band”. Their hiatus lasted until February 2019, when they announced their reunion on social media. Soon thereafter, they released a new single, “Sucker”. In June 2019, they also put out their 5th (and so far latest) record, the new Jonas Brothers album “Happiness Begins”.
The Jonas Brothers’ biggest hits to date are “SOS” (2007), “When You Look Me in the Eyes” (also 2007), the aforementioned “Sucker” (2019), and “What a Man Gotta Do” (2020). They also appeared in the 2009 blockbuster fantasy movie “Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian”, and had their very own documentary released by Amazon Prime Video in 2019, entitled “Jonas Brothers: Chasing Happiness”.
