Hans Zimmer is a German composer and music producer. He was born on September 12, 1957 in Frankfurt, West Germany. Zimmer grew up in the capitalist half of divided Germany, in a Jewish family. He taught himself how to play the piano, as he disliked the discipline of a formal lesson. He was even kicked out of many music classes. In high school, he joined a band.
In 1977, he started playing keyboard professionally for the Canadian band Krakatoa. He also worked with the British new wave band "The Buggles", best known for their “one hit wonder” single “Video Killed the Radio Star” (1979). Zimmer helped write that song, and even appears briefly in its iconic music video.
He went on to work as a keyboardist and composer for miscellaneous European bands, until he found a gig writing commercial jingles in the early 1980’s. He then partnered up with British film score composer Stanley Myers and the two co-wrote the music for over 60 movies over the years. The best known ones among them are "Insignificance" (1985) and "My Beautiful Laundrette" (also 1985). The first film Zimmer wrote the score for alone was the 1987 American comedy "Terminal Exposure".
Since then, he has composed the score for a vast array of Hollywood blockbuster movies. He has a total of 227 composer credits listed on his IMDB page. The best known movies Zimmer wrote music for are "Gladiator" (2000), "The Dark Knight" (2008), "Inception" (2010), and the James Bond movie "No Time to Die" (2021).
Zimmer gave his first live concert with an orchestra in October 2000 in Gent, Belgium. Since then, he’s been going on tours regularly from time to time. He also works as the head of the music department for the major American film studio DreamWorks. He won the Academy Award in the Best Original Score category twice so far: for the Disney animated film "Lion King" in 1995 and for the science-fiction epic "Dune" in 2021.
